Bit-tech & Custom PC Pub Quiz: The final results

Amazingly, many of the teams in the lower half of the table chose this point to turn around their fortunes, with Team Corsair, Team Aria Forums and Team PFS all notching a seven out of ten, which was enough to launch the latter two up a number of positions. Epic.LAN also scored highly in this round, and this, coupled with a score of five from both OCBATGTY and 192.168.X.X, put them right back in contention at the top of the table.

Also marked at this point were the second picture rounds that we’d handed out during the mid quiz break. Here the teams had to name the ten pictured multiplayer maps which, as it turned out, proved much trickier than the logos round we’d had previously. One team obviously knew their FPS games however, and unfortunately for OCBATGTTY and 192.168.X.X, one of these was Epic.LAN, who took the outright lead back with the round’s highest score of seven points.

Next up was a round that few people who experienced it are ever likely to forget; the hardest round of the night (with an average score of just 2), the Retro Tech Round. We thought that these questions would test your mettle (despite Ben, who wrote the round telling us that ‘they’re really not that bad’) but we weren’t quite expecting the long faces, tears and general despair that the round generated.

That being said, one team - one lone bastion of old school computing knowledge - rose above it all and scored a honesty really rather incredible six points; R.A.G. We hadn’t heard from them since their first round triumph, but, driven on by someone who clearly, like Ben, remembers some of the earlier days of computing, they were now making a late break for a podium position as their high score in this round pushed them up to fourth position.

The final round then, and with only two points separating the top three teams, it was on like Donkey Kong. It all came down to this, the Famous Game Quotes Round. This proved to be one of the most divisive rounds, with a broad spectrum of scores. Unfortunately one of the losers was R.A.G, who saw their late dash for a podium place scuppered by a score of 0, leaving them down in 8th. The big winner from the round though was The Squeaky Wheel Gets The Kick, who posted a score of 9 and leapt from mid-table mediocrity to a healthy 5th place finish.

At the top, it was tense, but Epic.LAN held their nerve and posted a solid 5 out of ten score; exactly equal to OCBATGTTY and 192.168.X.X and enough to secure them the title of bit-tech & Custom PC Pub Quiz Champions 2012. As winners they walked away with a Corsair Vengeance 2000 headset, Corsair K60 keyboard, Corsair M60 mouse, Custom PC subscription each, a commemorative winners cheesecake (which them promptly devoured), and the frankly priceless Golden Graphics Card winner’s trophy.

Congratulations too to second placed OCBATGTTY who each bagged a Corsair K60 mouse and K60 Keyboard, and the third placed 192.168.X.X, who won a K60 mouse each. Prizes of a Corsair Voyager USB3 USB drive were also awarded to All Our Beers Are Belong To Us, 8-Bit Heroes and Steve Ballmer’s Neck Sweat, who posted up the three funniest memes in the half time break and to Wheatley's Space Program, who won best team name.

Finally then, all that’s left for us to say is thank you again for coming along, thanks to Corsair for sponsoring the evening and making it all possible and thanks to The Phoenix for being great hosts. We’d also like to take this opportunity to announce that, given the success of the evening, we will be holding another quiz, likely in February of next year.

Obviously we want it to be as amazing as possible, so if you’ve got any ideas for rounds or feedback on the evening last week, we’d love to hear it either in the comment thread below or emailed to quiznight@custompc.co.uk. Also feel free to get in touch if you think you’d like to see a bit-tech quiz near you, if we get enough people suggesting the same area, we may well look into it. Cheers!
